Photochop of the Next Generation Lexus GS
Even thought the fourth-generation Lexus GS is still years away, it’s certainly fun to imagine what the next version will look like, and The Truth About Cars’ Andrei Avarvarii did just that, putting together this photochop:
I do like some of the touches, particularly the front-light treatment, but I don’t think Avarvarii’s photochop is heading in the right direction. There’s far too much ES 350 in the general shape, with elements of the Infiniti M for good measure.
Instead, I think the next GS is going to be much more aggressive-looking. Right now, the GS & ES share an uncomfortably close segment. Of course, there’s obvious differences in driving dynamics and styling, but there needs to be cleaner divide between the two models. In my mind, the GS needs to move towards something like the Mercedes CLS or BMW 6-series, and leave the practicality to the ES.

100% agree, the new GS will need to be a 4 door coupé to maintain the sporty look and feel, differentiate from the rest of the lineup and be a player on the Sport/Luxury market.

From the link:
“two of the best sedans on the market (IS & LS). The GS is the remaining model due to be L-freshened-up. ”
Whoever wrote that is an idiot. How can someone who works in the auto industry doesn’t know that the GS is actually the very first Lexus model that received the L-Finesse treatment?
It’s amazing how clueless sometimes people are…

” In my mind, the GS needs to move towards something like the Mercedes CLS or BMW 6-series”
You do know that the BMW 6-series is a coupe right?

Absolutely, I’m speaking strictly on a conceptual level, in that they’re both daring designs and sit between the family sedan and flagship sedan.

BTW, Isn’t the CLS a coupe too?

Personally I think the GS/ES midsize sedan mix is working for Lexus. For those who just want a reliable A-to-B commuter with a Lexus touch, the ES is the way to go. For those who enjoy driving a bit more and don’t mind paying a premium for more luxury then the GS is the car. The only thing I would change is to make the GS more sportier and performs better. The ES is good at where it is as the glorified Camry/FWD blvd cruiser.
Hopefully the next generation IS will grow a bit more in size (like the current 3er and G), with that I think Lexus will have a very versatile sedan lineup on its hands.

to Louis:
Looking at the sales # of the GS compared to all the other car of the lineup and compared to the sales # of the previous gen GS, I’d say the GS is not working, at all…
(I should know I sold mine…)

What’s this, you sold the GSh?
What did you replace it with?

krew:
I replaced it with a ‘08 IS-F, definitely not as smooth and luxurious, but much more involving and rewarding, specially at a sensory level, you got to love that exhaust/intake note ! I love it, mods are coming…

Well, that’s certainly a trade I can understand. Beautiful color, one of my IS-F favorites.
Great pick.

LOL
I see a lot of the LF-X (aka HPX) with a touch of ES and GS, an identical copy of the LS doors, and BMW’s muscular wheel fender in the front with the now-common arch.
It looks cool and all, but of course, it’s quite boring and not very aggressive as the GS should and hopefully will be.
Let’s all hope that Lexus comes up with something that will keep the public talking for days, months, …years!

Looks like an uglier version of the ES to me.
December 15th, 2008 at 11:36 am
I kinda want it to look like that so I won’t have the urge to trade in my current GS. That looks absolutely horrible.

Haha. That was hilarious.

Hmmmm. All you DUHHHHHHHHMEEEEEEEEEE’s know Lexus is better than that. Get your heads out cus we are still about 2 1/2 yeasr away!

I keep coming back to this photochop.
There’s certain elements, mostly the wheel arches and the overall lowered stance, that would look great merged with the ES 350. The front end is basically a mirror of the ES 350, anyway:
