2009 Lexus Models
Welcome to 2009!
To prepare for this new year, let’s recap what we can expect over the next twelve months. The most definitive information regarding Lexus’ future was a WSJ interview with Lexus General Manager Mark Templin, where he promised four new models this year. Here’s a breakdown:
New Lexus RX
The biggest Lexus story of 2008 carries into 2009. The new, fully redesigned RX is expected to hit dealerships in February. Both the conventional-gas RX 350 and the hybrid RX 450h were unveiled in November at the LA Auto Show, and created quite a stir with its evolutionary exterior and revolutionary interior.
Lexus IS Convertible
The long-expected convertible variation of the IS was introduced at the Paris Auto Show in October 2008, but probably won’t make it to dealerships until early summer 2009. The hard-top convertible coupe looks to be the successor of the SC, and also better equips the IS to compete with the versatility of the BMW 3-series & Infiniti G line-up.
Lexus HS 250h
We’ll know all the details on the HS 250h after next week’s Detroit Auto Show, where it will be shown for the first time. The above photo could very well be this new hybrid sedan, which is said to be the Lexus version of the Toyota Prius.
Mystery Fourth Model
The last model is currently unknown, and it adds a little intrigue to this new year. It’s widely expected to a new GX with looks based on the current LX 570 design, but there’s also a possibility we might see an F-Sport version of the LS.
There’s also been mention of LS & ES facelifts, similar to what happened with the 2008 GS & 2009 IS. This would likely include new grilles and headlight treatments.

wow can’t wait.i’m really looking forward to the IS250c and 350c, the HS and so called mystery model.the RX…sigh…it just looks too soft.i was expecting a sleek and luxurious yet agressive design like the infiniti FX.but it’ll do.

I just saw the new RX at the San Diego auto show and it’s extremely nice looking. it’s good that they didn’t go too radical on the redesign. Honestly the new version fits in perfectly with the current model line up.
The GX however is almost definitely the mystery model. It doesn’t fit in anymore and is really an area where Lexus can shine. Because Lexus has no third row in the RX so the GX is the next step and it’s starting to look old and the interior is in need of a makeover.
I’m currently saving up for a new IS, should take about 2 years to save up so i can pay it off in cash and the is convertible is getting pretty attractive

i was hoping for a Cóupe in the Lexus lineup. Based on the IS. The Camry Solara will not be offered any longer. So we have so single 2 door in the whole Toyota/Lexus/Scion lineup. Hope this will change soon…just my 2 cents

I’ll admit, I was hoping for a coupe-only IS to be announced this year as well. I think we’ll probably have to wait until the IS redesign before we see a coupe/sedan/convertible selection.

The IS is pretty much like a coupe anyway, as the rear is very cramped and rarely used… in my household anyway. But it’s nice having 4 doors for when you do need them.

The new convertible is going to surprise a lot of people with how much space there is in the back seat. This is going to be a perfect toy for those who like cruising with their friends.

This is in regards to the new RX: The chrome grille trim doesn’t work. I know what Lexus is trying to do here but it is a mistake, a “flaw” if you will. Please get rid of this design piece ASAP. All I am talking about is where the chrome bleeds at the top of the grille towards the headlights. Too much and looks wrong. You guys are really close to making your own true trademark grille however this is not it!

Well said, Raptor! Agree with you 110%.

I work at a Lexus dealership and at a training with corporate that told us that the fourth new vehicle for 2009 will be a newly designed GX and it will come out at the end of the year.

We were also told that the third row seats will be motorized and fold into the floor.

I think that will be a huge selling point. It was one of the biggest complaints with the LX 570.

no new GX until 2012 as told to me by the dealer today!

Hi JenK,
Your dealer must have incorrect information, the new GX will be introduced in the Fall of 2009 and will be in dealerships early 2010.
